Enterprise architecture provides the supporting system to further business strategy. To fully use current and future technology, the enterprise architecture must be stable, consistent and accessible.
The goal of enterprise integration (EI) is to provide timely and accurate exchange of consistent information between business functions to support strategic and tactical business goals in a manner that appears to be seamless.
Enterprise integration architecture (EIA) is about being reactive – it's architecture to facilitate integration of applications that were never designed to work together in the first place. Typically, the primary role of an EIA is synchronizing data among all the disparate systems. So, for example, you might need to make sure a customer's address change is recorded in all different systems that have a copy of the customer record.
Implementing the plan for enterprise integration requires a set of projects that rely on a systematic approach for representing business, information, and technology perspectives; a systematic method to plan for specific tactical solutions, including budgets and project plans; and an understanding of infrastructure issues, such as processors and storage, networking, data management, and management and staffing.
To understand the relationship between the technical issues, we developed an integration model:
Enterprise Architecture is the organizing logic for business processes and IT infrastructure reflecting the integration and standardization requirements of the firm’s operating model.
Practitioners are called enterprise architects. The practice of enterprise architecture has evolved into a broad category of activities designed to understand, optimize and, communicate the structure and relationships between various business entities and elements.
